Transforming Grand Rapids: A Call for Innovative Transit Solutions

Dear Grand Rapids Community,

As our city continues to grow, so does the need for alternative modes of transit. It's time to envision a Grand Rapids where increased bus services with enhanced frequency and extended hours become the norm, or better yet, a city that pioneers more permanent and transformative transportation solutions. We should, in navigating this potentially generational change, preserve what is left of the rich history of our beloved city.

But how can we achieve this vision? The answer lies in common-sense solutions, ones that have proven successful in cities like Washington D.C. (Metro), Vancouver, BC (elevated light rail), or Traverse City (free bus service on a long route). Let's learn from their successes and build something uniquely Grand Rapids—a transit system that offers a departure from the car-centric model seen across the country.

Currently, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is proposing a $600 million project to expand the footprint of Highway 131 within our city. This raises concerns about the loss of downtown land, increased congestion, and negative environmental impact on an already historically neglected and disenfranchised  southeast side of Grand Rapids. We must question whether this massive investment aligns with our vision for a more sustainable, safe, and successful city.

I urge you to consider these transportation challenges when selecting our city's elected officials. By prioritizing candidates who share our vision for innovative transit solutions, we can shape the future of Grand Rapids and become a beacon for change. Together, we have the power to make our city a model for progressive, safe, and sustainable urban living.

With optimism,

Stefan Pawelka
